Preschool Days

Getting on the bus with Daddy

Brett started preschool the first week in September and he has loved every minute of it! He is accompanied by his home healthcare nurse, Denise, on the bus and throughout the day in the classroom. His bus ride each way is only a few minutes since we live less than 2 miles from the school. However, he thoroughly enjoys his time on the bus.

His teachers, Miss Denise and Miss Diane are incredible! They have been so enthusiastic about having Brett in their class and spend countless hours working with him on a variety of tasks and projects. In the school setting, Brett now receives all of his therapies - - physical therapy, occupational therapy, vision, hearing and speech. Because Brett needs so many different types of therapies, we have to be careful that he still has time during the day to participate in the “regular” classroom activities - - like music time, arts and crafts and recess! On his very first day of school, he went down the playground slide with his teacher, Miss Denise! It’s so exciting for us to see Brett exposed to so many new and different activities that he might otherwise have not experienced. He also has the opportunity to use a variety of assistive technologies - - such as a computer program that allows him to trigger more music and animation on the screen by slightly touching a large keypad. It’s these types of experiences that have opened a whole new world for Brett.

He is also experiencing activities with other children for the first time. There are five other children in his class and he really seems to enjoy interacting with them. The beauty of kids at this age is that they don’t care if someone is different than they are. To them, Brett is just another kid in their class and that’s it. While the interaction with other children and more therapists has led to a greater frequency of colds for Brett, fortunately the trade off has still been in Brett’s favor. The colds have not turned into anything more serious - - and we recognized that at some point Brett would need to be exposed to these outside germs.

Brett and “nurse” Denise have also been bringing home all types of art projects, which we proudly display on the walls throughout the house. It’s a wonderful reminder as we look at those pictures that Brett is continuing to make great strides. It is hard to believe now that we initially had reservations about sending Brett to the classroom-based preschool program this past summer. We are so fortunate to have a wonderful group of teachers, therapists and a home health nurse who have made all of this possible for Brett. We are incredibly thankful for each of them and look forward to seeing what other new and exciting things Brett tackles the remainder of the school year. Stay tuned for more school updates….
